Terms of Use

Last updated: 7 May 2026. By using Brum.Land you agree to these terms.

1. About this service

Brum.Land (“the Service”) is a free, student-led study resource website for University of Birmingham Computer Science students. It is operated independently and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the University of Birmingham in any way.

The Service is provided on a best-effort basis, free of charge, with no warranties of any kind.

2. Acceptance of terms

By accessing or using Brum.Land you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service. We reserve the right to update these terms at any time; continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.

3. Content and accuracy

Brum.Land aggregates links to study resources, past papers, and AI-generated explanations. We make no guarantees about the accuracy, completeness, or currency of any content.

  • Always cross-reference with official University of Birmingham course materials, Canvas, and your module lecturer.
  • Past papers and mark schemes are linked for reference only; syllabuses change — older papers may not reflect current content.
  • AI-generated responses may contain errors. Do not rely on them as your primary study source.
  • Exam dates are sourced from publicly available university timetables. Verify every date against the official UoB timetable before your exam.

4. User accounts

Creating an account requires an email address, which is stored by our authentication provider (Supabase). By creating an account you agree that:

  • You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account.
  • You will not create accounts for others or share your account credentials.
  • We may suspend or delete accounts at our discretion if these terms are violated.
  • You can delete your account at any time by contacting us. We will promptly remove your data.

5. AI features and API keys

The Service offers an AI chat feature powered by third-party AI providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, OpenRouter).

  • Free tier: Signed-in users receive 5 AI questions per day at no cost, billed to us.
  • Your own API key: You may optionally save your own provider API key. Keys are encrypted using AES-256-GCM before storage and are never stored in plain text. Keys are used solely to make AI requests on your behalf.
  • We do not sell, share, or analyse the content of your AI conversations.
  • AI responses are not stored server-side beyond what is necessary to deliver the response.
  • You are responsible for complying with your AI provider’s terms of service.

6. Intellectual property

Brum.Land does not claim ownership of university course materials, past papers, or third-party content. We link to resources and host only materials where we believe redistribution is permitted or where content has been contributed by students with appropriate rights.

If you are a copyright holder and believe your work has been reproduced without permission, please contact us at brum.land@tutamail.com and we will promptly remove the content.

The Brum.Land name, logo, and original site code are our own and may not be reproduced without permission.

7. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use the Service in any way that violates applicable UK law.
  • Attempt to circumvent rate limits, quotas, or access controls.
  • Use the AI feature to generate academic work you intend to submit as your own, in violation of your university’s academic integrity policy.
  • Scrape, crawl, or automatically extract data from the Service at scale.
  • Introduce malware or attempt to gain unauthorised access to our systems.

The University of Birmingham’s Academic Integrity Policy applies to all students. Misuse of AI tools in assessed work may constitute academic misconduct.

8. Privacy and data

We collect the minimum data needed to operate the Service. Specifically:

  • Email address — for authentication only. Not shared or used for marketing without consent.
  • Encrypted API keys — stored server-side, encrypted at rest, accessible only to you.
  • AI usage count — a rolling 24-hour counter used to enforce the free tier limit. Not linked to content.
  • Bookmarks — stored in your browser (localStorage) only. Never sent to our servers.
  • Analytics — we use Cloudflare Analytics (privacy-preserving, no cookies, no cross-site tracking).

We do not sell personal data. We do not use advertising trackers. Users in the UK and EU have the right to request deletion of their data; email us at brum.land@tutamail.com.

9. Disclaimer of warranties

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available” without any warranty, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement.

We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of viruses. We make no warranty that exam dates, resource links, or AI responses are accurate or up to date.

10. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Brum.Land and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the Service, including but not limited to:

  • Reliance on inaccurate exam dates, past papers, or AI-generated content.
  • Loss of data, API keys, or account access.
  • Academic consequences arising from use of the Service.

Our total liability to you for any claim arising from use of the Service shall not exceed £0, reflecting the free nature of the Service.

11. Third-party services

  • Vercel — hosting (vercel.com)

12. Changes and termination

We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue the Service at any time without notice. We also reserve the right to update these terms; material changes will be noted by updating the “last updated” date at the top of this page.

13. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
